It was 10 years ago this month, muses Carol Miller, that WNEW-FM management declared classic rock dead.
That's interesting because today, classic rock WAXQ (104.3 FM) sits at a strong No. 2 among listeners, 25-54, the ones that advertisers most want to reach. As for Miller, now the evening host on WAXQ, she's No. 1 with that crowd.

"As the last of the full-time Mohicans at WNEW, I was allowed to plead the case for classic rock one last time," she says. "I presented a letter to the honchos arguing that the rock format could succeed if it were done right, as it was by former program director Larry Berger at WPLJ. I even ran into Mel Karmazin in the street, and told him the same thing. To no avail."
