June 4th 2009 - About that drum solo...

Last week, the community editor for the Grand Traverse Herald wrote a very clever column about distracted driving. Garret Leiva writes that during his daily six-mile commute to work in Traverse City, Mich., he spies drivers doing all sorts of activities other than driving, whether it's reading, eating, talking on the phone, or playing music. No, not playing the radio -- actually strumming a guitar!

The article is complete with a quasi Led Zeppelin reference when Garret says, "I witnessed air drumming on I-75. The driver was flailing around like a Jason Bonham solo." An interesting reference indeed! Of all the drummers in the world, he chose the son of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Where and when would he have heard a Jason Bonham drum solo?

My GTLO colleague Steve "The Lemon" Sauer asked Garret why he chose Jason Bonham as his muse. Garret wrote back: "I flaked. My mind said John but my fingers typed his son, Jason. I didn't realize this until you pointed it out. I guess that's what I get for writing my columns while driving in traffic - pop culture reference distraction."

Well, it says something about Jason Bonham's credibility as a drummer when he can be confused with his dad! I think his performance at the Led Zeppelin reunion show in 2007 helped his public image a lot, even though only 20,000 of us were there. Trust me, because I was there.... Jason is worthy of acclaim!
